One of the most common questions Lisa Giffen FNP-C hears at Giffen Health is: “Should I get Botox or fillers?” It’s a great question — and the honest answer is that they do completely different things. Understanding the difference helps you make the right choice for your face, your goals, and your budget.
What Is Botox?
Botox is a purified protein that temporarily relaxes the muscles responsible for dynamic wrinkles — the lines that form when you move your face. Think forehead lines when you raise your eyebrows, crow’s feet when you squint, and the “11s” between your brows when you frown. Botox doesn’t add anything to your face. It simply relaxes the muscles so those lines can’t form as deeply. Results typically last 3–4 months, and with consistent treatment, many clients find they need less over time as muscles become trained to relax.
What Are Fillers?
Dermal fillers work completely differently. Instead of relaxing muscles, they add volume — replacing what age, genetics, or weight loss has taken away. At Giffen Health, we use Juvederm, a hyaluronic acid filler that integrates naturally with your skin. Fillers can plump lips, restore cheek volume, define the jawline, soften under-eye hollows, and smooth deep lines that Botox can’t touch. Results last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years depending on the area and product used.
So Which One Do You Need?
Here’s a simple way to think about it: if your concern is lines caused by movement — Botox. If your concern is lost volume, flat cheeks, thin lips, or hollowness — fillers. Many clients benefit from both, which is why Lisa often creates a combined treatment plan during consultations. The key is having someone who understands facial anatomy well enough to recommend only what you actually need — nothing more.
Will It Look Natural?
This is the biggest fear — and it’s completely valid. The overdone, frozen, or overfilled look comes from too much product, wrong placement, or an injector who doesn’t understand natural proportions. At Giffen Health, Lisa’s philosophy is simple: enhance what’s already there, never override it. Her clients consistently describe their results as looking refreshed, not “done.”
What About Downtime?
Both treatments involve minimal downtime. Botox requires no recovery beyond avoiding exercise and lying flat for 4 hours post-treatment. Fillers may cause mild swelling or bruising for 24–48 hours, particularly with lip filler. Most clients return to normal activities immediately or the next day.
The Bottom Line
Botox and fillers are both safe, effective, non-surgical treatments with excellent safety records. They address different concerns and work best when recommended by someone who genuinely understands your face and your goals. At Giffen Health, that’s exactly what every client gets
